I once saw a video of a pole instructor on Instagram who described a particular spin as “very easy.” While scrolling through the comments, I noticed a conversation between a poler and the original poster. The commenter pointed out that this move should not be considered “easy” and that describing it as such might discourage others if they struggle to execute it. As a former English teacher, this made me think about the language we use when describing ourselves, our movements, our passion for pole, and when teaching students.
I didn’t engage in the conversation on Instagram, as I’m not one to start conflicts with fellow dancers, but I believe the commenter was right. Words matter. I don’t even remember the move in question, but it certainly wasn’t something I would describe as “easy.” Labeling moves as easy or difficult can make pole less accessible to many. Would we describe a Superman to a first-time poler as easy? Definitely not!
"WORDS MATTER"
Language shapes our perception and experience, especially in pole dancing, a discipline that requires both physical strength and mental resilience. When we label a move as “easy,” we inadvertently set a benchmark that might not be attainable for everyone. This can lead to frustration and self-doubt, hindering progress and enjoyment.
Instead of using terms like “easy” or “hard,” we can describe moves with more neutral and encouraging language. For instance, calling a move “beginner-friendly” or “advanced” provides a clearer indication of the skill level required without undermining anyone’s efforts. This approach fosters a more inclusive and supportive community where everyone feels empowered to progress at their own pace.

Moreover, as instructors and experienced dancers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of how we communicate. Encouraging words can boost a student’s confidence and motivation, while dismissive or overly critical comments can have the opposite effect. By being thoughtful about our language, we create a positive learning environment that celebrates individual achievements and encourages perseverance.
Really I just wanted this post to reflect that the words we choose matter significantly in the pole dancing community. They influence how we perceive ourselves and our abilities, and they shape the experiences of those around us. By using inclusive and supportive language, we can make pole dancing more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their skill level. Let’s be mindful of our words and strive to uplift and inspire each other on this incredible journey.
