I’m so fortunate in my life to have so many women to look up to. From my personal life to my professional life, I have a lot of women in my life that consider Bad Ass Girl Bosses. I actually know several women who are female-empowered business owners and have built their empires from the ground-up. Despite all of the shortcomings and obstacles that women must encounter in the workplace, I am so grateful to have these women in my life that I admire, cherish, and adore.
When you’re younger, it’s hard to imagine yourself bonding with someone over the simple construct of the gender you identify with; however, nowadays I find it to be more commonplace than ever. Woman share one thing in common: their sisterhood bond. I know it sounds super “Ya Ya Sisterhood”, but it’s true! Women need to stick together and build each other up, and that is a super hard pill to swallow for some (however, I digress).
This month I wanted to pay homage to 3 women throughout history that are Bad Ass Girl Bosses that have earned their feminine-achievement titles. Read with me as I obnoxiously yell “YASSS QUEEEEN” for these 3 queens.
ALICE ROOSVELT
To start, we are going back to the early 1900s with Alice Roosevelt. Alice Roosevelt (the oldest daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt) was known for not caring what people thought about her, throwing away all social conventions, and making a general ruckus in her life. She was known to have smoked cigarettes in public (something that women were not permitted to do at the time), partied very late, was caught riding in cars with unknown men, and even had a pet snake. She loved to play pranks and scorned the uptight rules for women of that time. It is rumored that she even buried a Voodoo doll of the First Lady, Nellie Taft, in the front yard of the White House. Wonder if it’s still there? She is a self-proclaimed hedonist (as am I!) President Roosevelt famously said “I can be President of the United States or I can control Alice Roosevelt. I cannot possibly do both. OG Boss Bitch
MARTHA STEWART
Okay I know this one might feel like it’s coming from left-field – but hear me out! It’s no surprise that Martha Stewart is an absolute icon. She founded her own enterprise, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia on her own, coming from a very middle-class upbringing. She dabbled in many early careers, even modeling for Chanel for a bit. Her mother was the role model who taught her how to sew and cook. What makes her a badass? Not only did she completely build her own empire through several channels, she marketing cooking and sewing not as “Feminine” traits like cooking for family, but as a lifestyle skill that all should know, catering to more confident, bold, and busy businesswomen. (Not to say that homemaking isn’t/wasn’t important in the landscape of women’s issues, but this was completely groundbreaking for the time.) To top it off, when she was convicted of felony charges of conspiracy to obstruct an agency and making false statements to federal investigators, she never named any of her other conspirators, other than the ones who were also caught and charged. Snoop Dogg and Martha Steward have an unlikely friendship, and reminded everyone of her silence when Tekashi 6ix9ine was arrested as well. She’s a true baddie
ETA: Fuck her for saying that remote work is killing Americans, though. Although a baddie, still an out-of-touch millionaire. #eattherich
MARGARET ATWOOD
Margaret Atwood, a writer of my own heart. She’s written poetry, essays, nonfiction novels, fiction novels, short stories – the list goes on. She’s one of the most prolific writers in our lifetime and has used her platform to discuss the plight of women’s rights and feminism. She also stands up for animal rights, politics, and considers herself an activist. She’s a personal hero of mine as I pen my own feministic metaphorical novel. She uses her platform as a way to better the world and speak out against injustice, in a way that she knows how. I don’t know a better way to help other people. Those who have a platform to reflect societal injustices have a duty to make these injustices known, and she does just that. If you haven’t read The Handmaid’s Tale or watched the Hulu adaptation, do so now. It’s so worth it. In her words she says, “A voice is a human gift; it should be cherished and used, to utter fully human speech as possible. Powerlessness and silence go together.” Hell to the yeah, Atwood
